(2020) The Outsiders Project

'After a two months pause, we are resuming our film screenings this coming Friday with a new collaboration. The reading group at the Association for Psychosocial Studies (APS) invited us to share a screening during their monthly meeting. This sounded an ideal occasion for screening a film that we have been wanting to watch with others since a long time: ΚΛΕΙΣΑΜΕ (2018) by Sol Prado. So please join us on for a screening in the company of Sol and APS' reading group followed by a large group conversation.
About the film and the Sol Prado:
"The short documentary ΚΛΕΙΣΑΜΕ [Enclosed] takes us to the Greek island of Leros, a museum of lockdown before the era of lockdown. Occupied by Italians between the First and Second World Wars, the island became a prison for political detainees during the Greek military dictatorship. In the 1970s, the island was re-functionalized as a psychiatric mental hospital. At present -a symptom of its time- it houses a refugee camp, set as a kind of "Chinese box" in a tourist destination of sun and sand. The origin of the project can be found in the diary that Félix Guattari -French psychoanalyst and philosopher- wrote during his stay on the island in 1989. In it, he denounced the conditions of confinement of psychiatric patients; a reflection of the treatment that European society accords to mad people. The short film is a study based on the director's personal experience, in which she mixes theoretical references with video games, anxiety calming apps and ASMR videos; artefacts designed for the evasion and dissociation of personal discomfort from the social causes that produce it. The piece silently and elegantly addresses the architecture of the lockdown, the dead time and the uncertain future. Like a kind of cursed luck, ΚΛΕΙΣΑΜΕ reveals and deciphers through Leros the sensations that would spread to the common sense of the world population during the 2020 pandemic."
Sol Prado is an artist, film director and textile designer. She grew up in Carapachay, Buenos Aires, she has resided in Barcelona since 2015, where she arrived to study the MACBA Independent Studies Program and established herself as a designer for the Gratacós textile company. Her artwork addresses madness and psychosocial diversity; faith and religion - which she abandoned after twenty after an evangelical education -; exile and migration. With the gaze of an archivist, her work tends to seek unseen identities, lives that are not counted.Currently, she collaborates with the International Errorista and is part of the board of directors of ActivaMent, a self-managed group of people with psycho-social diversity. ΚΛΕΙΣΑΜΕ [Enclosed], her debut as a director, premiered as the opening performance of the Loop Festival and has been screened at Olhar do Cinema (Curitiba), ZINEBI (Bilbao) and the Malaga Festival, among others.

About APS:
"The Association for Psychosocial Studies was formed in 2013 and it aims to develop new understandings of the interrelationships between social, cultural and psychological meaning and experience in different contexts.We are a newly established learned society, bringing together researchers, teachers, practitioners and students from different fields who are interested in contributing to the development of this exciting inter/trans-disciplinary field of study. We organise regular conferences, seminars and workshops that explore a wide range of psychosocial phenomena and perspectives. We seek to promote the field of Psychosocial Studies and to challenge the often rigid disciplinary distinctions that characterise the social sciences and the humanities in contemporary university settings and beyond."
Access:
The event is free and will take place online via the platform Zoom - APS reading group's usual platform. If you would like to join please register with APS via eventbrite. All registered attendees will be sent a Zoom link before the event. You will need a good internet connection and one device, either computer, laptop, tablet, Chromebook, smartphone. You should not need to open an account on Zoom to be able to join. It is possible to turn your cameras on or off and participate speaking or writing on the chat, as preferred.
ΚΛΕΙΣΑΜΕ (2018) is 22 minutes long and we will screen it without interruption. Considering the introductions, screening and post-screening exchange we estimate finishing around 6 pm (GMT). The copy of the film we will be screening this time is not audio-described and has no captions. As always, we aim to create a brave space where everybody feels it is possible to share personal experiences, anger and sorrows, ask uneasy questions, share resources, text and songs, or simply say our peace. We invite everyone to gently consider the feelings and possible experiences of everybody else. We first heard of brave spaces at Mad Studies Birmingham, where it was kindly presented as an alternative to safe spaces by Allison Joseph. We suggest here our very own understanding.
We are still learning how to make our gatherings more accessible. If you have any suggestions for how we can improve, please respond to this email and we will do our best to accommodate, this time and in future.'
